Tillid er et underbelyst begreb i retorisk teori til trods for, at indbyrdes tillid faktisk er en forudsætning for retorik. I denne artikel ses på forholdet mellem tillid og retorisk handlekraft, og det fremføres, at retorisk handle kraft tilskrives i tillid til andre, selvet og samfundets institutioner. I tillidskriser er de retoriske udfordringer derfor også betydelige. Når tilliden svigter, beskytter vi os selv snarere end at komme hinanden i møde, og det påvirker de retoriske ytringers udformning, mening og kraft til at virke.

Abstract

Title “Rhetorical Agency: An Attribution Based on Trust”
Abstract Trust is not just a result of rhetorical action but a precondition for it. While perhaps obvious, this is seldom made explicit in rhetorical theory. In this paper, therefore, I examine the relations between trust and rhetorical agency and argue that attributions of rhetorical agency are based on trust in others, in oneself and in the systems and institutions we share with those with whom we interact. This exacer bates rhetorical challenges during crises of trust. In situations where the warranty of trust is questioned we tend to safeguard ourselves sooner than reach out to one another. This affects the performance, meaning and force of the rhetorical utterances we make.
