Some historical and sociological considerations on the relationship between rhetoric and communication oriented textual sciences.

Kjell Lars Berge (2011) remarks

I have always been fascinated with the rhetorical tradition, and the combination in rhetorical theory and research of a probing descriptive approach to the rhetorical phenomenon on the one side and the normative discussion of the rhetorical practice studied on the other. Still, I do not think rhetoric and rhetoricians have met the theoretical and methodological challenges from the new research traditions focussing on communication, language, utterances, and texts based in a semiotically oriented theoretical framework. In my article I discuss some of these challenges from what I call a “socio-textological” approach. My standpoint is still that this approach would be of value in a discussion of how rhetoric should be positioned in the semiotic sciences.
